Lichen Necklace

$19.75

mini-lichen-01.pngThis necklace celebrates the lichen, nature's ultimate pioneer! Lichens, despite their appearance, are not plants, nor are they even a single organism, but rather a partnership between a fungus and a unicellular alga or cyanobacterium. Leveraging their individual strengths, these partners are able to colonize the most unpromising habitats, often attaching themselves to bare rock, anywhere from the frozen arctic, to the hottest deserts.

Like many of our items, this antiqued pewter necklace has an educational component. On its front surface, you can see Apothecea, perithecia, and isidia, several of the lichen's reproductive structures, and on one side, part of the lichen is cut-away, allowing you to see the algal cells enmeshed in fungal filaments. A great scientific accessory for lichenologists and other scientists, as well as nature-lovers everywhere!
