Ammonite Earrings
Ancient peoples who unearthed ammonite fossils thought they resembled ram's horns, and imagined them to be of divine origin. How amazed would these ancients have been to know that "ammonites" were the preserved shells of squid-like animals which had lived long before they supposed the Earth to have formed?
These earrings celebrate the ammonite, a cephalopod mollusc (related to squid and octopus) which abounded in the primordial seas. Although the ammonites left behind shells in a bewildering variety of shapes and sizes, they left little evidence of what their bodies looked like. Here, we have reconstructed what a living ammonite might have looked like.
Our ammonite earrings are assembled in two parts, creating a bi-colored finish of antiqued brass and antiqued pewter. A great gift for paleontologists and other fossil hunters, as well as fans of squid, octopus, and the other amazing cephalopods!
